How delightful, thought provoking and satisfying it was to read. The often-profound significance of stories is understated, never explicitly explained. Instead they grow into the ken of readers as they experience the events and encounters with the characters - very realistic and engaging situations. The adventure of reading them for me was to thoroughly immerse myself into them not knowing where the hell they were heading, identifying with this one or that one, becoming fearful or deeply concerned about their well being or even sanity and then only after not missing a none-too-obvious turning point, or going back to find it and identify it, get the catharsis. It's the kind of roller-coaster ride that heightens your perceptions and makes you almost preternaturally aware and sensitive to what's happening.
It's not like the easy reading of a Charles Dickens' story, but it's in the details just as visceral with the added bonus of having to engage your mind while flying by the seat of your pants. I hope that comes close to describing how reading the stories has affected me.
There's a nice variety of subject matter too. Growing up and growing out of life from a denial of alcoholism in "South Side." The deep ethnic urge and rage to defend one's spiritual roots in "The Territory" and "Lac Court Orielles." The marvelous twisting of Divine Providence (fate and communal human love) in "Bayou La Batre," less obvious, but also there in "Block Wars." The struggles to maintain and grow in love and develop deeper commitments in "Mapquest Paradise," "Broken Wing," "Yafa Street," and "Man in a Box." Also in "Yafa Street" the prophetic effect of Iraq on its veterans becomes formidable. Most of all, however, probably because I vividly remember those who guided me through my first year of teaching and beyond, I loved Maggie of "The Swellest Thing." What a fine tribute!
